Integrated tomato value chain

Building Africa’s integrated tomato value chain, starting in Ghana.

FarmMate contracts and supports over 3,000 farmers across 10 regions of Ghana. We buy, sort, process and sell their harvest from the Legon Post-Harvest Hub, so tomatoes grown in Ghana reach Ghanaian tables in every season.

The problem we solve

Ghana grows tomatoes it cannot keep,
then imports tomatoes it cannot grow in time.

1.4m MT
eaten every year
Ghana consumes about 1.4 million MT of fresh tomatoes a year but grows only about a third of them.
800,000+ MT
imported to fill the gap
The gap is filled mainly by imports from Burkina Faso between December and May. Supply is scarcest in June and July.
20–60%
lost after harvest
In the August to November glut, farmers lose 30% to 45% of their tomatoes for lack of buyers, storage and processing.
How it works

One operator, from the farm to the shelf.

  1. 1
    Farm
Contracted farmers in the southern, middle and northern belts get seed, crop nutrition, irrigation support, advice and crop insurance.
  2. 2
    Aggregate
Our grower services team collects tomatoes in crates, not sacks, and pays a guaranteed pre-agreed price.
  3. 3
    Sort and Sell Fresh
Every delivery is graded at the hub. The best grade is sold as CountryFresh fresh tomatoes to shops, hotels, restaurants and households.
  4. 4
    Process
The rest becomes CountryFresh tomato puree in pouches, buckets and aseptic drums.
  5. 5
    Store and Distribute
Puree is held in our warehouse and sold all year through distributors, retailers, institutions and depots.
From our farms

Every tomato starts in the field.

From sowing to harvest, FarmMate works season by season with the farmers who grow for us.
